Wild Rose – Film Review

Rose-Lynn Harlan gets out of jail after serving twelve months for attempting to smuggle heroin and she heads home to Glasgow where her Mum Marion (Julie Walters) has been caring for Rose’s two young children Lyle and Wynonna.

Rose has her sights set on becoming a country singer in Nashville, and thanks to an electronic monitoring bracelet she wears as part of her parole conditions is unable to return to her old job in a Country Music themed bar, so finds a job as a housemaid for well to do Susannah (Sophie Okonedo) in order to raise enough money to head to America.

It’s a gorgeous film that hinges on a superb central performance by the Irish Buckley and a strong presence overall by the primarily female cast.

3 & ½ Stars. “What a Performance!”
