Ben Stiller and Naomie Watts play Josh and Cornelia – a childless couple in trendy New York.
Their best friends played by Maria Dizzia from Orange is the New Black and The Beastie Boys Adam Horowitz aka Ad Rock have just had a baby and Josh and Cornelia are struggling to feel relevant as they deal with being in their forties without kids.
Enter hip young couple Jamie and Darby, played by Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried, who replace Josh and Cornelia’s old friends and inject a new youthful vitality into their lives.
Let’s take a look at a scene where Josh and Cornelia are explaining to their old friends the appeal of their new young compadres.
What’s great is that it’s not pitched as a comedy, rather a tragedy, and it’s here that Watts and Stiller excel with their respective characters.
Stiller in particular has struggled with more serious roles, from Greenberg back in 2010 to The Secret Life of Walter Mitty the year before last.
This film feels like an introduction to what a grown up Ben Stiller looks like, and it’s absolutely riveting.
So why would a couple of young 20 something’s really be so interested in a couple in their 40s? You’ll just have to watch.
